Smart Contract ถูกนิยามขึ้นครั้งแรกในปี 1996 โดย Nick Szabo โปรแกรมเมอร์ชาวสหรัฐว่า “Smart contracts are digital protocols for information transfer that use mathematical algorithms to automatically execute a transaction once the established conditions are met and that fully control the process” หรืออาจกล่าวสั้นๆ ได้ว่า Smart Contract คือ ชุดของสัญญาในรูปแบบดิจิทัลรวมถึงโปรโตคอลที่ทั้งสองฝ่ายปฏิบัติตามสัญญาเหล่านี้ แต่น่าเสียดายที่ตอนนั้นยังไม่มีเทคโนโลยี Blockchain มาช่วยให้ Smart Contract เกิดขึ้นจริง แล้ว Smart Contract ทำงานอย่างไร?

ก่อนที่เราจะเข้าใจว่า Bitcoin Halving คืออะไร เราต้องเข้าใจก่อนว่า Bitcoin นั้นมีจำนวนจำกัดอยู่ที่ 21 ล้าน Bitcoin เท่านั้น และไม่สามารถทำการเพิ่มขึ้นได้เนื่องจากโครงสร้างของตัวสกุลเงินดิจิทัลอย่าง Bitcoin ทั้งหมดถูกเข้ารหัสไว้อย่างจำกัดเพียง 21 ล้าน Bitcoin เท่านั้น ซึ่งการที่จะได้ Bitcoin มาครอบครองนั้นจะต้องผ่านกระบวนการที่เรียกว่าการขุด (Mining) โดยนักขุด Bitcoin ที่ค้นพบบล็อกใหม่สำเร็จเป็นคนแรกก็จะได้ Reward (รางวัล) เป็น Bitcoin นั่นเอง
